Since 1973, UCSC has been required by the Rehabilitation Act to provide equal access and reasonable accommodation to registered students of the University. The ADA requires us to make all of our programs and services accessible to students, staff, faculty, and members of the public who are eligible to participate. The most common access issues are physical access, access to information, and policies and procedures that may present barriers to people with disabilities. "Programs and services" is to be broadly interpreted. It includes any educational activity, public entertainment event, lecture, colloquium, meeting, conference, social event, information, food service, lodging, etc. -- anything the University does that involves people. If you are sponsoring any activity that is open to the public (such as a lecture series, a performance, or a social event), you are responsible for providing reasonable accommodation to any participant with a disability, including members of the community. All events open to the public must be held in accessible locations. (Check the list of currently inaccessible locations to make sure the venue you are considering is accessible.) Publicity for such events must include notice about how to request disability-related accommodations. Such accommodations might include a sign language interpreter, assistive listening devices, or enlarged-print materials. A checklist for making sure your activity is accessible is available on-line, as well as a list of common accommodations. Conversely, if you wish to participate in any activity sponsored by the University of California, you can request reasonable accommodations for your disability-based needs. Contact the unit sponsoring the event you are interested in as soon as possible to make your request. Further information about accessing programs: Back to The ADA at UCSC Back to UCSC's Home Page
