Making Your Event Accessible: A Checklist
- Publicity for the event indicates a willingness to accommodate persons
with disabilities, and identifies the contact person and notification timelines.
The following wording can be used as a template:
[Your department/unit] wishes to make this program accessible
to people with disabilities. If you have disability-related needs, please
contact [person] at [phone number] as soon as possible. (You may also
include a specific date.)
- Publicity discourages attendees from using scented products. The following
statement has been used successfully:
Out of respect for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities,
please refrain from using scented products when attending this event.
- A good faith effort has been made to provide a location which has good
ventilation, has not been recently painted, and is not carpeted.
- Publicity and any visual information (e.g. programs, slides, overheads,
handouts) can be quickly provided upon request in alternative formats (e.g.,
electronically, large print, etc.). If you are showing a film or video
that is not available with captions, be prepared to provide a
sign language interpreter or real-time captioner upon request.)
- The event is scheduled in a room that is accessible
to those who use wheelchairs. The following rooms are currently inaccessible:
- Classroom Unit 201
- Crown Senior Commons Room
- Kresge Commuter Lounge
- Kresge 319
- Kresge Provost House
- Kresge Study Center
- Women's Studies Lounge (at Kresge)
- If the event is held outside of normal building hours, and an elevator
will be used by people with mobility impairments to get to the event site,
make sure the elevator will be turned on. Contact Custodial
Services at x9-4737.
- Assistive Listening Devices are available for use by persons with hearing
impairments. (Media Services North has a number of portable Assistive Listening
Device systems available for on-campus use. Contact them for more information
at x9-2117.)
- If a hearing-impaired person has requested it, arrangements have been
made for the use of a sign language interpreter(s) or a real-time captioner. (Contact
information for interpreters and captioners is available through the Disability
Resource Center (x9-2089).
Note: This is not an exhaustive list. Rather, it reflects the most common
accommodations requested of campus units in recent years. If someone requests
an accommodation which has not been mentioned here, make your best effort
to provide that accommodation. If you think the request is unreasonable, or
are not quite sure why it would be appropriate, contact the ADA Compliance
Officer for Program Access at 459-2089 (459-4806 TDD). She may be able to
confirm whether a requested accommodation is appropriate, or suggest alternative
accommodations.
