Accessible Parking at UCSC

Parking Options

If you have a disability-related need to park close to buildings, you have several options at UCSC:

  • You can park in accessible parking spaces (formerly known as "disabled" or "handicap" parking spaces).
  • You can park in Medical spaces. Medical spaces were created to accommodate those who need to park close due to disability-related reasons, but don't need the extra width provided by accessible parking spaces.
  • You can park in metered spaces without paying the meter fee, or in 10, 15, or 20-minute spaces for longer than the posted time.

IMPORTANT:
Once you affiliate with the University of California (i.e., become a staff, faculty, student, volunteer, or vendor), you are required to purchase a UCSC parking permit to park on campus, except in meters. The use of a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) "disabled" placard alone without a UCSC parking permit is permissible only for visitors. Affiliates with DMV placards who chose not to purchase a UCSC parking permit may park in metered spaces only. Parking without a UCSC permit in medical or handicap spaces even with a DMV placard is a ticketable offense for UCSC affiliates.

Parking Fees

The cost of an A/H permit is usually the same as an A permit. Drivers also have the option of paying the lower-priced "remote" rate to use accessible spaces located in the remote lots. They can then use the campus shuttle system or the Disability Van Service to reach their on-campus destination. A "no-cost" option is available by arriving on campus using the SCMTD bus sytem, and then transferring to either a campus shuttle or the Disability Van.

Some permanent disabilities make using mass transit difficult, if not impossible—specifically, those who use wheelchairs, those with severe stamina impairments, and those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. For these UCSC affiliates, a discounted "A/H" permit is available for the "remote" permit price. Students meeting these criteria should contact the Disability Resource Center to request a discounted permit. Faculty and staff should contact the campus Disability Management Coordinator to make their request. Faculty and staff who qualify for accessible parking automatically qualify for the reduced A/H permit price, due to the provisions of California Assembly Bill 2222. Students who have a permanent disability and have a fixed income, such as SSI, SSDI, or AFDC, can request that their parking fee be waived completely.

More information about disabled parking permits (including where they are valid, and how to apply for them) is available at the TAPS web site.

Parking Citations

If you think you have wrongfully been issued a parking ticket for parking in an unmarked space or in a 10-minute zone while displaying your A/H permit, you may request a "Parking Violation Administrative Review" by email. This service is available to A/H permit holders only. Please send the following information to rftanner@ucsc.edu:

  • citation number
  • car license number
  • date and time of citation
  • what you were cited for
  • where you were cited
  • why you are contesting the citation

You will receive a response within 48 hours letting you know whether or not the citation was dismissed. Please include your mailing address if you are not listed in the campus directory.
